Question:
How can I allow my end users to update their own content? At the moment I am spending all of my time doing updates for clients content.
Resolution:
The key thing to note is that users of the system may not want to learn a complex package like Acquire, or you may not want to give them too much control (especially if they have no technical experience in rendering images or video content and you are providing a route to them updating it), so it is worthwhile remembering that it can often be the best route that your remote site owners contact you and send you the details and media they want to appear on their screens. This way, you have complete control over what is shown and can approve any media both aesthetically and technically before it is played.
Acquire has many ways of providing alternative routes to update content. You may wish to look through the following options to find the best one for your needs.
MyMessage Service |
For a small charge per month, this provides your users with a ‘messageboard’ service for use with the RSS helper. You can configure different feeds for different messages, and each site can have their own specific feeds or share a global feed. Includes options to allow sites to choose images or pre-uploaded media (through the PLUS! network – option if required), or to upload their own images; also options for scheduling of the messages and approval of messages. The resulting RSS feed is specific to each site, and can be displayed either natively in Acquire (as scrolling text, or placed media and text), or the information can be accessed from an Adobe Flash file (see ‘Using Flash in Acquire’ for more information). |
Site Owners can choose and/or upload images, as well as a number of messages. Acquire Editor owner chooses when and how the media and messages are shown. MyMessage service can be branded with your logo and the URL masked with your own. |
RSS Helper |
The RSS helper allows you to connect to any RSS feed service (including ones you provide youself. The contents of the RSS feed can be displayed either natively in Acquire (as scrolling text, or placed media and text), or the information can be accessed from an Adobe Flash file (see ‘Using Flash in Acquire’ for more information). |
Site Owners can choose and/or upload images, as well as a number of messages. Acquire Editor owner chooses when and how the media and messages are shown. Requires you to purchase or setup your own RSS feed generator. |
RemoteMedia Helper |
The RemoteMedia Helper is configurable to let each player download it’s additional content from either FTP sites or HTTP web sites. The player regularly connects to the URLs you choose and compares the files it has locally, downloading any that have changed. |
Ideal if you develop your own website, or wish to use a third party website where your users can upload their own content, for the player to subsequently download.
|
FolderSlideshow |
Folder Slideshow is purely for local access of media. Using Microsoft File and Print sharing, either by sharing a unit’s Hard Disc, or mapping a network drive from another computer, the Folder Slideshow helper will regularly monitor the folder for media of a type you choose (graphics, videos, sounds, etc). If any are found, it sets the path and filename into an Acquire Variable which can then be chosen in Acquire to be shown on a page. The variable is updated every time a page changes, so all the media found is randomly chosen. |
Ideal for showing locally controlled media files, where you can choose the filetypes allowed. |
Local Variables |
Acquire allows you to choose files for use on a page at the time of the page showing, rather than when you design the page. To do this, simply use an Acquire variable for the filename, and set it whenever you want to change the media to something else (this can be done as a page shows, of from a Flash animation, or from an ACQ or in a script, or per player). As an example, the variables can be set using an external program which could reside on the site’s PC, so the text or media is changeable whenever they want just by running the program. See ‘Using Variables in Acquire’ for more information about variables. |
Local site owner can change media and text and choose the playlist to play. |
Local Triggers |
Acquire Player has an option to use external trigger events to jump to pages (this is separate from any other trigger event generated by using an ACQ or helper with a ‘jump to page’ option, which are equally valid). Simply choose the input method on the player settings screen (USB, Keyboard or Network) and enter a valid pageID followed by pressing Enter for that page to be shown. If you want, you can change the $$_ChannelScript variable on that page to make Acquire show a different script. |
Local Site owner can change the currently playing page or script. Player can also respond to page change messages from a network source (e.g. third party program, central site). |
Acquire SOLO |
Acquire Solo is a self-contained player and web-based Acquire Editor, all provided on a pre-configured computer. Because it is web-based it is naturally feature-limited (i.e. no ACQ configuration, Targetting, etc), but this also means it is simpler to use than the main Acquire Editor. All content can be centrally controlled and sent to an Acquire SOLO unit (and scripts and pages can be locked to prevent them from being locally edited). Local users access rights options prevent users from performing specific tasks if you prefer. |
Complete local control of Pages and Scripts and Media, whilst retaining central control and support. Multiple levels of access and control. Simple to access using a web browser. |
SaaS |
‘Software as a Service’ is a phrase being used in a number of industries today, but effectively means you pay a monthly fee to use software rather than purchasing it. We change the meaning slightly, as we can host a fully customised content management system for you to provide access to your clients. As well as being branded to yourselves or your client’s needs, it provides a fully customised interface that they access via a web-browser to only provide the functions you require. |
Completely branded and customised solution. Monthly fees |
Dynascript |
The SaaS service above makes use of the Dynascript helper, but you are able to use the Dynascript helper yourself on your own customised website if you prefer. Dynascript allows each player to have their own, simple playlist of pages, scripts or changing variables rather than using the scheduled scripts sent by the Acquire Editor. |
Solution to provide customised playlist using your own systems |
Custom Development |
The team behind Acquire have much experience in creating customised solutions for our clients, and if you have a specific requirement, we would be more than happy to quote you for the work. |
